MediHome, the UK’s leading provider of nursing care at home, is using the latest
mobile technology to update patients’ records at the point of delivery and thereby
improve the quality of patient care. Patients who are completing their recovery
at home will now have their medical records updated whilst being treated by the
visiting nurse or consultant. Salient information including vital signs, wound images,
medication administered and general observations are all input.
Hospital personnel and Consultants will be able to view this information immediately
through a secure web link, ensuring that the patient receives the best and most
up to date medical attention.
MediHome has implemented this solution, in conjunction with O2 and software company
Evaware, and is the UK’s only healthcare provider with the ability to update EPRs
at the point of delivery.
Nick Dyer, Managing Director of Evaware explains – “The MediHome implementation
is based on our MACIC (Mobile Autonomous Clinical Information Capture) solution
which is a new range of clinical software designed for Laptops and PDAs and provides
instant access and updating. Data is entered against observation or pathology templates
together with clinical free text fields. MACIC is easy to use and does not rely
on technical staff to add functionality or amend existing facilities.”
MACIC goes beyond just patient care. The system provides a wealth of management
and administrative information to allow health care managers to analyse the types
and volumes of services being provided and to be able to plan with greater accuracy
future needs. MACIC records data based on SNOMED-CT which means it is forward compatible
with the National Programme for IT’s (NPfIT’s) own Electronic Patient Reporting
system and is already delivering the kind of increased levels of efficiency and
patient care anticipated by the Connecting for Health initiative.
Mark Lomax Managing Director, and founder, of MediHome explains – “Patient care
is our number one priority and using the latest Internet technology means we can
meet the highest standards of care whilst enabling Clinicians to retain control
of the patient’s treatment and recovery. Our implementation of MACIC creates a ‘Virtual
Community’ of Healthcare professionals and Clinicians, wherever they are based,
with access to the patient’s medical records and status.”
MACIC allows the storage of images and provides the very latest status of the patient
with immediate access to X-Rays, Wound Images, ECG Reports, Blood Tests and other
key data.
Mark concludes – “Our implementation of MACIC and use of O2 PDAs allows us to communicate
more information to a wider audience faster than by any other means. Consultants
can complete a Virtual Ward Round within minutes without leaving their desk or home.
They can even use the system to provide us with further instructions. The great
advantage of MACIC is that we record the most up to date information at the point
of delivery and then make it instantly available to all interested parties.”
MACIC is provided free of charge to Project E-vita ASP Service subscribers.
