Very few fields of data are mandatory on the enrollment screen removing frustration with lengthy registration processes. If the PC has a camera attached then a picture of the person can be included in their record. Each person has their finger scanned twice to improve accuracy. The system allows you to scan two fingers (Normally one finger from each hand) to record against the person's record. This way either finger can be used to retrieve the person's identity. Although the screen will show an image of the scanned fingerprint, the image is not actually stored in the system. The image is shown on the screen so that the operator can ensure the quality of the scan is good. The Project E-vita System only stores fingerprint "minutiae data" from the scan. Minutiae data cannot be used to reconstruct a fingerprint image thus avoiding personal privacy issues that may arise from storage of biometric data. Each record is allocated a unique Identity with a check digit to reduce errors in its transcription. If you would like to view a Flash demonstration of the enrollment process click here. There are three distinct ways to retrieve a record. By use of either the person's unique ID, or by a combination of surname, postcode and date of birth either individually or in conjunction with one another and finally by use of their fingerprint. The use of a check digit in the unique ID reduces any chance of an incorrect record being chosen due to transcription or transposition errors. Locating a person's record by surname or their post code or their date of birth allows for wildcards in the surname and post code field (IE Find all persons with surname starting with smith).
